The CAS recently opened the application process for candidate representatives interested in serving on the Candidate Liaison Committee (CLC). Keep reading to know the details behind why you should apply today!
Before I applied to join, I had no idea what the Candidate Liaison Committee does. Upon investigation, I found that the CLC facilitates communication between the CAS and candidates moving through the examination process.
The CAS values feedback from candidates, and this committee is one of the primary ways they get that information. The CLC solicits feedback on the exam process and any other issues that affect candidates. Over the past year, I have seen how seriously the CAS takes candidates’ input. This has included surveys about the exams and the Online Courses. Offering fellow candidates a voice on topics that are important for the profession is a key ingredient to participation on the CLC.
One of the main tasks of the CLC is producing the quarterly Future Fellows newsletters. Serving on the committee will provide opportunities to write articles for this publication. Representatives can write about subjects of interest to candidates moving up in the profession. I have enjoyed seeing behind-the-scenes for how the newsletter comes together. I even got to write several articles for Future Fellows!
Over the past year, the CLC has also launched this blog. This gives Committee members more frequent opportunities to write about topics of interest to the actuarial community.
Serving on the CLC is a great avenue to stay in touch with what is going on with the CAS. Through participation on the Committee, I have learned a great deal about the examination process. I was not aware of how thorough the creation and grading process is for each of the CAS exams.
Serving on the Committee also affords representatives the chance to share comments and concerns from co-workers with the CAS. One candidate representative had other opportunities open up for her within her company, just because she serves on the CLC. This was an added benefit to serving that she had not been expecting!
By now you must be asking yourself, how do I apply? To serve on the Committee you will need to be a candidate for the Casualty Actuarial Society and active in the examination process (must have sat for a CAS examination within the last two sittings). Representatives serve two-year terms. You will be asked to participate in the quarterly telephone conferences and one annual in-person meeting. In order to apply you will also need one letter of reference from a CAS member.
A completed application (http://www.casact.org/admissions/CLCApplication_2016.pdf), a resume, and the letter of reference from a CAS member must be submitted to the CAS by Thursday, October 6, 2016. It can be emailed to Admissions Manager Stephanie Litrenta (slitrenta@casact.org). New representatives will be selected in November.
